BQDC Mid-season Report
The Brooks Quimby Debate Council has started off the 2012-13 season with a slew of exciting results in both American and British Parliamentary debate. As a team, Bates is currently ranked 14th in the country on APDA (American Parliamentary) and 19th in the latest Word University Debate Rankings (British Parliamentary).
On the APDA circuit, Bates has been led by sophomore sensation Taylor Blackburn. Blackburn is currently 24th in speaker of the year rankings with speaker awards from Columbia, Northeastern, and Johns Hopkins. Blackburn also teamed up with fellow sophomore Matt Summers to take fourth place at Harvard, the largest APDA tournament of the year.
In British Parliamentary, the BQDC had several impressive team performances at the Oxford IV and University of Vermont Huber Debates. At Oxford, Bates placed teams 19th, 24th, and 31st at one of the toughest tournaments in the world. Alum Colin Etnire ’12 also was awarded the 4th place speaker award. Bates had three teams break at UVM and two of the teams advanced to the final round, finishing second and third.

First-year Sasha Grodsky is currently 22nd in the novice of the year rankings and advanced with first-year Detmer Kremer to novice finals at Mount Holyoke. First-year Taylor Stone was 4th novice speaker at Boston University.
The team recently hosted a high school tournament that ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of tournament directors Matt Summers, Ashleen O’Brien, Jillian Zook, all class of 2015.
