A Note From Our Coach
Jan Hovden, Director of Debate, Brooks Quimby Debate Council
10 February 2010
As many of you are aware, economic circumstances have had a deleterious effect on the Bates Endowment. While the debate team has so far been able to maintain the size of its budget, we have not been able to account for the variable costs based upon the location of the Worlds University Debating Championships.
Next year, the Worlds tournament will be in Botswana and the following year it will be in Manila. As a result, the cost of attending the tournament will be significantly greater than it has been in the past couple of years. The Worlds tournament provides students with the opportunity to learn firsthand how to argue across cultural boundaries--an invaluable skill in a globalized economy.
Schools are allowed to bring three teams to the tournament, and our current budget allocation will not allow for us to bring three teams because of the cost of plane tickets to these locations. I am asking for alumni support to help us bring three teams to the tournaments. Donations of any size are helpful and appreciated. If you wish to help us meet our goal of sending students this tournament, you may send donations to:
Terry Baillargeon 2 Andrews Road, Lewiston, ME 04240.
Either in the memo line of the check or in an included note, indicate you wish the funds be given to the debate team. Donations can also be made via credit card on the Bates College website . In the box that specifies other, please note that the donation should be given to the debate team.
Thank you all for your help in maintaining the international presence and prestige of the Brooks Quimby Debate Union.
